about

THE MUSIC

This four movement work was commissioned for the opening of the 2003 Fremantle International Jazz Festival featuring an all-star mixed ensemble of 27 performers. The subject of the commission was the iconic and tragic figure Charles Yelverton O'Connor who changed the course of WA future with his daring engineering projects.

The incredible inaugural performance was recorded live and the work has become a set-work for Western Australia secondary music students.

THE INSPIRATION

One of the monumental heroes of Western Australia was civil engineer, C.Y. O’Connor. His vision in the development of Fremantle Harbour allowed riches to flow to all parts of the world. He also created the ‘golden pipeline’ from Mudaring Weir to Kalgoorlie, which brought the much needed lifeline of water to the goldfields, savings hundreds of lives and developing a sustained gold mining industry, which still prospers today.

His tragic death and subsequent legacy left an indelible impression on this State’s history and its people and the Fremantle International Jazz Festival is privileged to be able to acknowledge this valiant individual through the music of Michael Pignéguy.

Featuring the extraordinary talents of local and visiting artists the work will divide O’Connor's life into four movements;

Initiation  Success  Tragedy  Liberation
